Lester Holt has said goodbye to NBC Nightly News and we’re giving you some insight into his exit.
The 66-year-old journalist announced his exit from the show back in February and explained the decision behind his departure.

“After 10 years, 17 if you include my years on the weekends, the time has come for me to step away from my role as anchor of Nightly News. It has truly been the honor of a lifetime to work with each of you every day, keeping journalism as our true north and our viewers at the center of everything we do. But before we play the walk off music, I have another announcement,” Lester said in February.
He added, “I’m excited to report I will be continuing as anchor of Dateline NBC, but for the first time in a full time capacity whereby I will be expanding my footprint on the broadcast….I am thrilled to be able to work more closely with my enormously talented friends at Dateline as the broadcast continues to grow and attract new viewers in new places.”
Lester‘s final show on Nightly News aired on Friday (May 30) ahead of his move to Dateline.
On his final show, he told the audience, “Before we go tonight, a word about me. You may recall the announcement back some months ago that I would be leaving my post here at Nightly News in order to expand my role as host of Dateline. Well, today is that day. After 10 years, this is my last nightly news broadcast.”
“I’ll miss our evenings together, and I will miss the team that puts it all together, my dear friends and my colleagues,” he said. “But for now, I just want to say thank you to my incredibly supportive and patient family, and all of you.”
Several other news anchors have also exited their positions this year.
